Recent research is advancing both "thermochemical and biochemical conversion pathways", with technologies such as pyrolysis, gasification, hydrothermal liquefaction, torrefaction, fermentation, and anaerobic digestion receiving increasing attention. These approaches can transform biomass into products including bio-oil, biochar, syngas, biomethane, bioethanol, hydrogen, and other renewable fuels and chemicals.
Innovations in reactor design, catalysts, pretreatment, process integration, and product upgrading are helping researchers improve conversion efficiency and product quality. Catalytic approaches, for example, are being investigated to improve selectivity and reduce energy requirements in processes such as pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction, and gasification.
